STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES PROCEDURES

It is St. Martin Parish School Board’s responsibility to provide safe and appropriate emergency care to students with chronic and acute health needs.  Trained employees shall strive to accurately maintain blood glucose levels of insulin dependent students within therapeutic ranges as specified by the attending physician’s written orders until the arrival of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

It is the policy of the St. Martin Parish School Board that injectable glucagons may be administered to a student with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus by trained, unlicensed school employees (who have been duly trained by St. Martin Parish School Board Registered Nurses) in a life-threatening situation throughout the school day on campus in all areas, at school sponsored activities/functions, and when transporting to/from said functions, all in accordance with state law and the following specific protocol.

The St. Martin Parish School Board Emergency Plan shall be enacted in the event of a crisis situation regarding the medical concern.  Additionally, if a student is under six (6) years of age or has increased diabetic needs, and has glucagons, the St. Martin Parish School Board will provide a LPN, RN, or trained unlicensed school personnel in the community at all times.  The St. Martin Parish School Board Registered Nurses will also be available by cell phone and/or pagers at all times.  Individual needs of the student will be assessed by the Registered Nurse, who will implement safeguards according to findings.

The St. Martin Parish School Board protocol for a student with Insulin Dependent Diabetes with increased hypoglycemia is outlined in the Louisiana Department of Education’s School Based Nursing Services in Louisiana Schools, A Resource Handbook for School Nurses and School Administrators.
