EMPLOYEE THREAT OF SUICIDE

 

 

If any employee of the St. Martin Parish School Board makes a direct suicidal threat and/or gesture, or in any way indicates a desire to harm himself/herself, the following procedure shall be followed:

 

  1. The employee's direct supervisor shall be contacted immediately.

  2. The immediate supervisor shall contact the Supervisor of Human Capital to inform them of the current situation.  The immediate supervisor shall follow the chain of command within the Department of Human Capital if the Supervisor of Human Capital is unavailable.

  3. The employee shall be put on "suicide watch” immediately (Employee is to be under observation at all times).

  4. The immediate supervisor shall ask employee to identify a family member or friend that can come to pick them up in order to bring them to their Primary Care Provider, therapist, or nearest emergency room for a suicide assessment.  (The employee shall not be allowed to leave the premises on his/her own.  In the event no one is available to transport employee to obtain an assessment, local law enforcement or sheriff's department shall be notified and ambulance called to transport employee to nearest emergency room for assessment.)

  5. An assessment by a physician or qualified mental health profession outside of the St. Martin Parish School system shall be required before the employee is allowed to return back to work.  Written documentation from such provider shall also be required before employee can return to work.  This paperwork shall be kept at both the school level and in the official personnel file.
