MINUTES

 

                The St. Martin Parish School Board convened on this day at 5:00 P.M. at the Breaux Bridge Instructional Center with the following members present:  Messrs., Mark Hebert, President, Floyd Knott, Steve Fuselier, James Blanchard, Aaron Flegeance, Richard Potier, Rodney Ledoux, Frederic Stelly, and Ms. Wanda Babin and Mrs. Barbara Latiolais.

 

                ABSENT:               None

 

                The meeting was called to order by Mr. Mark Hebert, President.  Superintendent Lavergne opened the meeting with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. 

 

Ms. Crystal Caillier, St. Martinville Primary Third Grade Teacher, was recognized as the Taylor and Sons March Employee of the Month.

 

On the motion of Mr. Blanchard, seconded by Mrs. Latiolais, and unanimously carried, the Board approved the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of March 4, 2009.

 

On the motion of Mr. Flegeance, seconded by Mr. Fuselier, and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request for permission to call for bids on Janitorial Products.

 

On the motion of Mr. Blanchard, seconded by Mr. Ledoux, and carried, the Board approved the request for waiver of sales tax penalties, as recommended by administration, for Ouachita Energy Corporation.

 

OPPOSED:             Mr. Flegeance

 

On the motion of Mr. Potier, seconded by Mr. Ledoux, and unanimously carried, the Board approved the Save the Children Foundation Grant Award to Breaux Bridge Elementary School.

 

On the motion of Mr. Blanchard, seconded by Mr. Ledoux, and carried, the Board approved the Student and Parent Handbook/Discipline Policy changes for 2009-2010, with the exception of the addition to the following statement:

 

Furthermore, no student assigned to any alternative disciplinary school setting, such as JCEP, shall be permitted to participate in extracurricular activities that are school sponsored until they have successfully completed their time in the alternative setting.  Student will return to extra curricular activities on a probationary basis.

 

OPPOSED:             Mr. Potier and Ms. Babin

 

On the motion of Mr. Fuselier, seconded by Mrs. Latiolais, and unanimously carried, the Board approved the proposed 2009-2010 School Calendar for St. Martin Parish Schools (attached as Exhibit A).

 

On the motion of Mr. Blanchard, seconded by Mr. Flegeance, and unanimously carried, the Board approved the following resolution declaring April 27-May 1, 2009 as Violence-Free Schools:

 

WHEREAS, St. Martin Parish School Board is dedicated to providing the children of the parish with a safe, healthy and Violence-Free environment to attend school; and

 

WHEREAS, Louisiana has implemented a successful Violence-Free program; and

 

WHEREAS, St. Martin Parish School Board has developed an exemplary program to steer children away from violence; and

 

WHEREAS, the citizens of St. Martin Parish want all students to succeed in a safe school; and

 

WHEREAS, business, government, law enforcement, religious institution, service organizations, medical, senior citizens, military, sports teams, and individuals have demonstrated their commitment to Violence-Free schools; and

 

WHEREAS, the American public wants and promotes safe Violence-Free schools.

 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the St. Martin Parish School Board urges continued support and funding for the successful Violence-Free School Program.

 

                On the motion of Mr. Blanchard, seconded by Mr. Flegeance, and unanimously carried, the Board went into Executive Session.

 

                On the motion of Mr. Fuselier, seconded by Mr. Flegeance, and unanimously carried, the Board came out of Executive Session.

                A motion was made by Mr. Blanchard and seconded by Mr. Fuselier to follow the recommendation of the administration regarding the employee discussed in Executive Session.  The motion was voted on and failed as follows:

                OPPOSED:      Mrs. Latiolais, Mr. Potier, Mr. Ledoux, Mr. Stelly, and Ms. Babin

 

                On the motion of Mrs. Latiolais, seconded by Mr. Blanchard, and unanimously carried, the Board approved the following Personnel Changes:

On the motion of Mrs. Latiolais, seconded by Mr. Flegeance, and unanimously carried, the Board adjourned.
